3 island destinations in the Mexican Caribbean

You have been to Cancun and Riviera Maya… multiple times… and you love it, but now, you’re wondering where else can you visit to mix things up a bit!

I have great news for you! There are 3 island destinations within Cancun/Riviera Maya area that you have probably not visited yet! And they are pretty easy to get to, and can offer some fun vacation experiences!

Here are the 3 island destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, and few things to know about each one of them:

1. Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is located about 25-minute ride and 30-minute ferry ride north of Cancun International Airport. Isla Mujeres is known for beautiful white sand beaches, and turquoise blue waters. The island is small, approx. 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide at the widest point. Golf carts, scooters and bikes are the most common forms of transportation on the island. Tourists often rent golf carts and explore the island.

Isla Mujeres is home to many sea turtles, so if you want to see some of those majestic creatures, this destination may give you that opportunity. You may also want to visit Tortugranja – Turtle Farm – where you can learn more about this species.

Island is also very popular for snorkeling year round, and whale shark excursions at certain times of the year.

The resorts on the island are smaller, more boutique. There are some all inclusive properties, but also many EP hotels that will force you to experience the destinations like locals.

2. Isla Holbox

Isla Holbox is quickly gaining on popularity, however it is still not super touristy or commercialized, so if you want to experience a more authentic Mexican vacation, this may be the spot for you.

Isla Holbox is located about 2-hour drive and 25-minute ferry ride north from Cancun or Playa del Carmen areas. The island is small, only about 2.5 miles long and 1 mile wide. Isla Holbox is “sleepy little fishing village.”

Fishing is very popular on the island, and so are tours to see whale sharks and manta rays. Kitesurfing is also a good pastime. Beaches on Holbox are beautiful, sandy and perfect for long walks.

Hotel base is still limited on Holbox, but more and more resorts are looking into expanding into the area. You do have options for some authentic experiences, as well as some resort-style accommodations. We predict that soon, the tourism on the island will grown and expand. Now may be the best time to experience the island while it still provides and authentic experience.

3. Isla Cozumel

Cozumel is the biggest of the 3 mentioned islands, and the most known to an average traveler. You can reach Cozumel in 3 ways: 1. Fly into Cozumel airport; 2. Take a ferry from Playa del Carmen (approx. 45-minute ride); 3. Visit on a cruise ship.

Cozumel is a big cruise ship port, and many decide to visit the island that way. Flights to Cozumel are pretty good from USA, with some nonstop options available.

Isla Cozumel is diver’s paradise due to pristine waters and abundance of marine life, like sea turtles, dolphins, exotic fish and sharks. The island is located by the world’s 2nd largest barrier reef, so possibilities for divers and snorkelers are endless here.

Island offers a decent selection of all inclusive and EP resorts and hotels, so everyone can find something they will like here.

So, there you have it! A quick spotlight of 3 Mexican Caribbean islands. Which one will you choose for your next adventure?
